Play by the Rules
Football, soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey; no matter what you play, you’ve got to play by the rules. Otherwise, you will get a penalty. Imagine if someone pays the penalty for you. Then you wouldn’t have to pay it! The Bible teaches God’s rules. Things like not to lie, steal, hate or use God’s name carelessly. Have you ever done any of those things? Have you ever disobeyed your mom or dad? When you die, God will check if you have kept his rules (Hebrews 9:27). Breaking God’s rules is called sin. Just like in games, God has a penalty for sin; eternity in Hell. God does not want to punish you in Hell (2 Peter 3:9). He loves you so much that he sent his Son, Jesus, to pay the penalty for your sin (John 3:16). Jesus never broke even one rule. He lived a perfect life and willingly died on the cross to pay for your sin. Then he rose from the dead defeating sin and death. You broke the rules. Jesus paid the penalty! If you are sorry for your sin, then turn away from it and do the opposite (that’s called repentance). Then trust that Jesus paid the penalty for you.
